Traditional knowledge is an increasingly established resource for modern medical science. However, its relevance is often seen as limited to the extent that biochemical terms are clear, while the interest that drives research to reveal those terms is delayed or hampered by a lack of understanding of the broader, older philosophical corpus of knowledge and culture that has produced a particular treatment or formulas. These notes suggest how and why this might happen and why a broader philosophical understanding might boost scientific progress resulting from the encounter between modern science and traditional and alternative medicines .
