Antibacterial drugs currently used for treatment cause various side effects, and bacterial protection against antimicrobials is also increasing. Therefore, there is a need to find better alternatives. Essential oils (EOs) have been used for the treatment of various conditions since time immemorial and have gained popularity over time. The prosperity and efficacy of EOs have been demonstrated by various clinical principles. This review provides an overview of EOs, their uses, and side effects. A written search was conducted in PubMed to obtain initial clinical studies and review articles on EOs approved up to February 2015. The search was conducted during March 2015. The following keywords were used: “Lavender essential oil”, “cinnamon oil”, “clove oil”, “eucalyptus oil”, “peppermint oil”, “lemon EO” and “tea tree oil”. In light of the open data, it could be assumed that EOs could potentially be developed as preventive or supportive therapies for various oral diseases, although further clinical trials are expected to develop their safety and sufficiency.
