Ten different strains of Lactobacillus were isolated from marine waters using MRS medium. In MRS broth, all strains showed uniform growth. All strains were Gram-positive, rod-shaped, homofermentative bacteria with round, creamy, smooth colonies on MRS agar medium. They were oxidase and indole negative. Some of the strains are catalase positive. The carbohydrate utilization profile is strain-specific. All the isolated strains were unable to utilize arabinose.
