A wireless sensor network (WSN) comprises of numerous autonomous tiny devices called sensor nodes spread in a particular area. The nodes are capable of monitoring the ambient conditions and then passing the related data through the network from various different locations to a main location. The efficient energy utilization is one of the important performance factors for wireless sensor networks survivability as the nodes operate with limited battery power. In this paper, we have given a comparative study of three clustering based benchmark protocols called LEACHhomogeneous, LEACH- heterogeneous and HEED for wireless sensor networks on the basis of base station position and network lifetime.
